Newsletter 11
27th May

Dear Parents,

The children have been enjoying the rather less intense atmosphere since the tests finished, but they have continued to work hard, and you can see many signs of this around the school and even in this newsletter. Children in Year 3 have worked towards a beautiful display of Indian prints, while Y4 have made some ingenious wooden models of minibeasts. Year 5 have produced some really cleverly-made shoes, while Year 6?s clay work is also delightful. The general air of creativity is increased by the singing, dancing and acting going on as the children prepare for their productions and for the Country Dancing festival.

All of this, of course, helps to take our minds off the noise and disruption caused by the building work! I have been informed by the contractors that next week will be an extremely active week, so do please emphasise that more than ever the children should keep well away during the holiday. Class 6J move out of their room today and into the single hut, and the renovation of their area will begin immediately.

Finally, inside this newsletter is a summary and response to the survey we sent out at the end of last term. Thank you very much for your response to this. If you would like to see the full version of this, please ask at the school office.

Yours sincerely

S E R James
Headteacher

RECYCLING AT ST ANDREW?S
?Somerset Waste? have been in on two days this week working with the children to consider creative ways of using items that are normally thrown away. The children have learned a great deal from these visits, and have had a huge amount of fun at the same time! This visit was organised by Mrs Pook as part of our Global education programme, which contains a number of events each year as well as providing a good focus for the children in our Collective Worship sessions during the year.

STAFF VACANCY
We have a vacancy from September for a full time Teaching Assistant to work at St Andrew?s for the coming year. The work would be in Years 3 and 5 for two days a week, with the fifth day in Year 4. Hopefully, the successful candidate will be able to offer skills in display work as well good organisation and, if possible some training and/or experience in this role. The post will be advertised in the Burnham Weekly News next week, so do please draw it to the attention of anyone you know who may be suitable for this type of work.

WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPH
The children may have informed you that we are to have a whole school photograph on Wednesday, 8th June, the day after we return. Despite the warmer weather, we are hoping that all children will wear a school jumper on that day. If this presents a problem, do let us know.

150th ANNIVERSARY PLANS
We are now in the process of putting together a written history of the school, which we hope we will be able to have published later this year. This work is being done by Mrs Dixon, Mr James and three former members of staff, Mr Peter Horsey, Mrs Jo Plested and Mrs Viv Hares. If you have anything that may be useful for this project, do please let us know so that we can have as wide a selection of memories as possible upon which to draw. There will also be an exhibition in the early part of next year, so exhibits for that will be eagerly sought after!

SPONSORED THREE-LEGGED EVENT
Thank you for your support once again in this week?s fund raising effort, organised by SASA to raise money to improve our reading and library resources. The children have done the hard work, and you should be receiving their completed forms soon if you haven?t already. We will be pleased to receive the collected money any time from when we come back.

RETIREMENT AT INFANT SCHOOL
We have been informed that Liz McKimming is to retire from her work at Burnham Infant School after 21 years as a Lunchtime Supervisor! They are secretly holding a collection for her, so if you would like to contribute, you can do so at the office there, or you can bring money to us to pass on.

COMPETITION AT SANDERS
Sanders are holding a competition for children from 6 to 12 to grow marrows and sunflowers. They can pick up their free plants there from Saturday June 4th (one plant per child, first come first served) and they are to be returned on the weekend of 17th / 18th September for judging. There is also a category for children five and under.
