9th May

Dear Parents,

There are more merits being gained this year than ever before, which is very good news! Large numbers of children have been gaining award certificates for 50, 100 and even 150 merits. Many children have told me they hope to gain significantly more than in previous years, and it is good to see this desire to improve. As many of you will be aware from experience, we write to you when your child gains the first two awards, to make sure you are aware how well they are doing. If they move on to even higher awards, we leave it to them to break the good news to you!

There is information inside about our premises development, and you may wish to make a note of the expected start of activity this week, as there will be a great many vehicles on site. Please be aware of this if you are here with small children. We will be discouraging children from walking in the danger areas, and hope you will support us in this safety measure.

Finally, may I remind everyone that parents? vehicles are not permitted on the school site at any time unless there is a particular exceptional circumstance that demands it, or if you are coming during the day to keep an appointment with a member of staff. Obviously we will be increasingly safety conscious over the next few months, so hope you can help us to keep our grounds safe by keeping vehicles away. Many thanks!

Yours sincerely

S E R James
Headteacher

SCHOOL DINNERS
We are having some problems with dinner numbers this term, particularly children switching between having school dinners and packed lunch with no clear warning or pattern to the changes. The kitchen staff have to order their food several days in advance, and it is very difficult for them to cope with unexpected additions to their numbers. Also, the unexpected nature of the changes can lead to recording errors which have meant some parents have had large bills for dinners that their children have not received. We would be most grateful if you would help us avoid these problems by ensuring that your children do not switch between dinners and packed lunches unless it is to a regular and understood pattern. We will not be able to supply a meal to a child who arrives without their usual packed lunch unless we have had plenty of notice. It is also worth reminding everyone that prompt payment for meals is appreciated, as the school has to bear the cost when payments are delayed. Thank you!

PREMISES NEWS
I am pleased to be able to report that this week we will at last see the start of the major final stage of our premises development. The contractors, Pollards, will arrive on site, all being well, on Wednesday and set up the site. Work should then begin next Monday. Their first tasks will be to dig the foundations of the new two-class block in the area which used to contain the old hut classroom. They will also be starting work renovating the former Year 5 area. Mrs Sampson?s former classroom will be significantly enlarged, to include the old toilet block and part of what used to be Mrs Pook?s classroom. The remainder of that second room will provide a small group teaching room and corridor space for the new block. This phase, along with the eventual upgrading of Class 6J, is scheduled to last until the end of August. Regular updates will be given in newsletters during the remainder of this term.

THE TEST SEASON
The national tests began today for Year 6 children. Along with children of the same age all around the country, our oldest pupils are taking the ?SATs? in the hall, hut and classrooms, and we wish them all the very best during this important week. If your child has any problem either with worry or illness during the week, please let us know straight away so that we can help them get through the week! Next week, our other children will have their turn, and then there will just be the annual reading tests to go in the yearly round of assessment checks..

CLASS ASSEMBLY
Class 4D entertained us splendidly recently with their Class Assembly based around the theme of Dreams and including the folk tale of Tiddalik the Giant Frog. The children spoke and acted with great skill and enjoyment and the whole thing, one could say, went like a dream?
